Pipe Fittings Tee

Classification of tee fittings

Tee fittings are common connectors in pipeline systems, mainly used to achieve pipeline diversion, confluence or change of flow direction. According to the relationship, angle and diameter change between the main pipe and the branch pipe in the pipeline, tee fittings can be divided into the following categories:

1. Straight Tee

Straight Tee means that the diameter of the main pipe and the branch pipe is the same. It is usually used for fluid diversion or confluence in pipeline systems and is common in various ordinary pipeline systems. Due to its consistent diameter, the flow distribution of the fluid is relatively uniform, so it is suitable for occasions with certain requirements for flow control.

Application: Applicable to industries such as petroleum, chemical industry, water supply and drainage, especially when the pipe diameter does not need to change, the straight tee can efficiently distribute or merge the fluid.

2. Reducing Tee

The branch pipe diameter of the reducing tee is smaller than the diameter of the main pipe, and is usually used in occasions where the pipe diameter needs to change in the pipeline. When a small-diameter pipe needs to be connected to a large-diameter pipe, a reducing tee is a common connection method. It can effectively connect pipes of different diameters and ensure a smooth transition of fluid flow.

Application: Widely used in pipeline systems that transport fluids, especially in situations where the pipe diameter needs to be changed, such as water distribution systems, gas pipelines, etc.

3. Y-Tee

The branch pipe of the Y-Tee is at a certain angle to the main pipe, usually 45°. This design helps to reduce the resistance of the fluid. Due to the change in the direction of fluid flow, the Y-Tee is usually used in high-flow pipeline systems or fluid transportation containing granular media. The angle design can reduce the impact of the fluid and avoid damage to the pipeline system.

Application: Commonly used in pipeline systems with high flow rates or high pressures, such as chemical, mining, sewage treatment and other fields, especially suitable for pipelines that need to reduce fluid resistance and wear.

4. Lateral Tee

The branch pipe of the lateral tee is at a certain angle to the main pipe, usually 60°. This angle design is suitable for specific fluid transportation needs, especially pipeline systems that require flow in a specific direction. The oblique tee can effectively distribute fluid in the pipeline while avoiding excessive fluid resistance.

Application: It is usually used in some occasions that require higher flow rate or special fluid delivery direction, such as some special industrial pipeline systems. Through this angle, the oblique tee can effectively control the flow direction and pressure of the fluid.

Material of tee fittings

The material of the tee fittings has a decisive influence on the industry and working environment to which it is applicable. Tee fittings of different materials have different performances in corrosion resistance, strength, service life and installation and maintenance, and are suitable for different working conditions. The following are several common materials of tee fittings and their characteristics:

1. Carbon steel tee

Carbon steel tee is made of carbon steel material and is widely used in general industrial pipeline systems, especially in industries such as petroleum, chemical, electric power and machinery manufacturing. The main advantage of carbon steel tee is that it has high strength and is not easy to deform when subjected to high pressure, so it is suitable for most conventional working conditions.

Advantages: It has good strength and pressure resistance, is suitable for general industrial fields, and has relatively low cost.

Disadvantages: Carbon steel is susceptible to corrosion, so in a highly corrosive environment, the service life will be shortened, and regular maintenance and coating protection are required.

Application: Industrial piping systems such as petroleum, chemical, steel, and electricity.

2. Stainless steel tee

Stainless steel tee is made of stainless steel material and has excellent corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance. This makes stainless steel tee widely used in many special industries, especially in areas with high hygiene requirements, such as food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

Advantages: Corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, strong chemical resistance, good oxidation resistance, suitable for harsh environments, and long service life.

Disadvantages: The cost of stainless steel tee is relatively high, and it is suitable for occasions with high corrosion resistance and hygiene requirements.

Application: Food processing, pharmaceutical, chemical transportation, seawater pipelines and other industries.

3. PVC/PE tee

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and PE (polyethylene) tee materials have good corrosion resistance, chemical resistance and light weight. They are often used in water supply and drainage pipelines, gas pipelines and agricultural irrigation. PVC and PE materials can resist most acids, alkalis, salts and chemical corrosion, and are easy to install and maintain.

Advantages: corrosion resistance, strong chemical resistance, light weight, easy installation, economical and practical.

Disadvantages: may not be as durable as metal pipes in high temperature and high pressure environments, suitable for conventional low temperature and low pressure environments.

Applications: water supply and drainage pipes, agricultural irrigation, gas pipelines, etc.

4. Copper Tee

Copper Tee is very common in air conditioning, refrigeration and water supply systems. Copper material has excellent thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance, suitable for high temperature, high pressure and antibacterial requirements. Copper Tee also has strong durability and is not prone to corrosion in humid environments.

Advantages: good thermal conductivity, strong corrosion resistance, suitable for high temperature, low temperature and humid environments, excellent antibacterial properties.

Disadvantages: Copper material has a high cost, is relatively heavy, and is easily affected by certain acidic substances.

Applications: air conditioning, refrigeration, water supply system, hot water pipe, drinking water system.

Connection method of tee fittings

The connection method of tee fittings directly affects the installation, maintenance and sealing of the pipeline system. According to different pipeline installation requirements, tee fittings can adopt different connection methods. Common connection methods include the following:

1. Butt Welded Tee

Butt welding is to directly connect the two ports of the tee fitting with the ports of the pipeline and fix them by welding. This method is suitable for high-pressure and large-diameter pipelines, and the welding connection can provide stronger sealing. Due to the firmness and sealing of the welded joint, the butt welded tee is particularly suitable for pipeline systems that withstand higher pressures and is often used in industries such as oil, natural gas, and chemicals.

Advantages: It provides very strong sealing, is suitable for high-pressure and large-diameter pipeline systems, and will not cause fluid leakage after connection.

Disadvantages: The welding process has high requirements, the installation process is relatively complicated, and professional technology and equipment are required.

Application: high-pressure pipelines, large-diameter pipelines, chemical and petroleum industries.

2. Socket Welded Tee

The socket welding connection method is used for small-diameter high-pressure pipelines. The connection method is to insert the pipe into the socket of the tee and then weld it. Socket welding can enhance the strength of the connection and is suitable for small-diameter high-pressure pipes that require high sealing. Compared with butt welding, socket welding is more suitable for small-diameter pipeline systems, and its construction is relatively simple.

Advantages: Suitable for small-diameter pipes, welding connection enhances the connection strength and has good sealing.

Disadvantages: Suitable for occasions with small pipe diameters, and attention should be paid to the symmetry of the butt and the quality of welding during installation.

Application: Small-diameter high-pressure pipes, especially for precision or high-pressure liquid delivery systems.

3. Threaded Tee

Threaded connection is one of the most common connection methods. The two interfaces of the tee pipe fitting and the port of the pipe are connected together by threads. The connection method is simple and easy to disassemble, especially suitable for low-pressure and small-diameter pipes. The biggest advantage of threaded connection is that it can be easily disassembled and repaired, so it is suitable for pipeline systems that need to be replaced or overhauled regularly.

Advantages: Simple connection, easy disassembly and replacement, suitable for small-diameter and low-pressure pipes, and quick installation process.

Disadvantages: Suitable for low-pressure systems, cannot withstand excessive pressure, and has relatively poor sealing performance.

Application: Low-pressure small-diameter pipes, water pipe systems, air-conditioning pipes, fire-fighting pipes, etc.

4. Flanged Tee

Flanged connections are usually used for large-diameter pipes or pipe systems that require frequent disassembly and cleaning. Flange connections can provide better sealing performance by bolting the flange of the tee fitting to the flange of the pipe. At the same time, flange connections facilitate the disassembly, maintenance and replacement of pipes, so they are particularly common in some special occasions.

Advantages: Strong connection, strong sealing, easy disassembly and cleaning, suitable for large-diameter pipes and systems that require frequent disassembly.

Disadvantages: Additional flanges and bolts are required, and more labor and time costs are required during the installation process.

Application: Large-diameter pipe systems, especially pipes that require regular maintenance and cleaning, such as water supply, heating, chemical and petroleum pipelines.
