Classification of pipe fittings by material

Classification of pipe fittings by material

1. Cast steel pipe fittings: Cast steel pipe fittings have high strength and toughness, can withstand greater pressure and impact, and are suitable for some high-pressure and high-temperature pipeline systems, such as steam pipes and high-pressure water pipes in power plants and chemical plants. However, the corrosion resistance of cast steel pipe fittings is relatively poor, and special anti-corrosion treatment is required in some corrosive media environments.

2. Cast iron pipe fittings: Cast iron pipe fittings have good corrosion resistance and wear resistance, and are relatively cheap. They are widely used in building drainage, municipal sewage and other fields. Common ones are gray cast iron pipe fittings and ductile iron pipe fittings. Gray cast iron pipe fittings have low strength, but low cost, and are often used in general drainage pipes; ductile iron pipe fittings have high strength and toughness, and are suitable for some occasions with high requirements for pipe strength, such as urban water supply pipe systems. In old urban communities, many drainage pipes use cast iron pipe fittings. Although they have been used for many years, they can still work normally.

3. Stainless steel pipe fittings: Stainless steel pipe fittings have excellent corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and high strength, beautiful surface and clean and hygienic, and are widely used in food, medicine, chemical industry, building decoration and other industries. According to the chemical composition and performance characteristics, stainless steel pipe fittings are mainly divided into austenitic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel, martensitic stainless steel and duplex stainless steel. Austenitic stainless steel, such as 304 and 316 stainless steel pipes, has good corrosion resistance, formability and weldability, non-magnetic or weak magnetic properties, and is widely used in food processing, medical equipment and other fields. Ferritic stainless steel has a high chromium content, good corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance, magnetic properties, and high thermal conductivity. It is suitable for making utensils such as cookware that require high thermal conductivity; martensitic stainless steel can change its hardness and strength through heat treatment, and is often used to make knives, cutting tools, mechanical parts, etc.; duplex stainless steel has the advantages of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steel, has high strength, good corrosion resistance and weldability, and is suitable for marine engineering, chemical equipment and other occasions that require high material performance. In the kitchen and bathroom piping systems of some high-end hotels, stainless steel pipe fittings are often used, which not only ensures the hygiene of water quality, but also improves the overall quality of the building.

4. Plastic pipe fittings: Plastic pipe fittings have the advantages of light weight, corrosion resistance, easy installation, and low cost. They are widely used in home decoration and some low-pressure piping systems. Common plastic pipe fittings include PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipe fittings, PPR (random copolymer polypropylene) pipe fittings, PE (polyethylene) pipe fittings, etc. PVC pipe fittings have good chemical corrosion resistance, self-extinguishing and flame retardant properties, and are widely used in building drainage, municipal sewage and rainwater drainage. PPR pipe fittings have good heat resistance and pressure resistance, are non-toxic and odorless, and are the preferred materials for home water supply systems. PE pipe fittings can be widely used in gas transmission, water supply, sewage, agricultural irrigation, oil fields, mines, post and telecommunications, etc. In home decoration, PPR pipes and PVC pipes are the most common plastic pipes, and their connecting pipe fittings are also used in large quantities accordingly.

5. Rubber pipe fittings: Rubber pipe fittings have good flexibility, sealing and corrosion resistance, and are often used in some occasions that require buffering, sealing or conveying corrosive media, such as soft connections of chemical pipelines, cooling water pipes of automobile engines, etc. Rubber pipe fittings can choose different rubber materials according to different use requirements, such as natural rubber, nitrile rubber, fluororubber, etc. Natural rubber has good elasticity and wear resistance, but poor oil resistance. Nitrile rubber has excellent oil resistance and chemical corrosion resistance, and is often used in pipelines for conveying oil media. Fluororubber has extremely high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and chemical resistance, and is suitable for some extremely harsh working environments.

6. Graphite pipe fittings: Graphite pipe fittings have good corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and thermal conductivity, and have unique applications in some high-temperature and highly corrosive chemical production. For example, in some pipelines for conveying corrosive media such as strong acids and alkalis, graphite pipe fittings can play their excellent corrosion resistance and ensure the long-term stable operation of the pipeline. However, the strength of graphite pipe fittings is relatively low and the texture is brittle. Special attention should be paid to avoid collision and excessive force during installation and use.

Pipe fittings use appreciation

As an important part of the pipeline system, pipe fittings are widely used, covering many fields such as construction, industry, agriculture, transportation, etc. Let's take a closer look at the specific applications of pipe fittings in different fields.

Construction field

In the construction field, pipe fittings are indispensable key components in water supply and drainage systems, heating systems and gas pipeline systems. In the water supply and drainage system, various pipe fittings work together to ensure the normal supply of domestic water and the smooth discharge of sewage. For example, PPR pipe fittings are often used in building water supply pipelines. Their good corrosion resistance and hygienic properties can ensure that the water quality is not polluted and provide residents with safe and reliable domestic water. PVC pipe fittings are the first choice for building drainage pipes. Their inner wall is smooth, the water flow resistance is small, it is not easy to scale, and they have good corrosion resistance. They can effectively prevent sewage from eroding the pipes and ensure the smooth flow of the drainage system. Fittings such as elbows and tees play an important role in changing the direction of pipelines and achieving branches in the laying of water supply and drainage pipelines, so that the pipeline system can be reasonably laid out according to the building structure and water demand. Pipe fittings also play an important role in the heating system. With their high strength and good high temperature resistance, steel pipe fittings can withstand the transportation of high-temperature hot water and ensure that heat can be evenly transferred to each room. Pipe fittings such as pipe clamps and unions are used to connect pipelines, which facilitates the installation and maintenance of heating systems. When the pipeline needs to be inspected or parts replaced, they can be easily disassembled and reconnected, greatly improving work efficiency. For gas pipeline systems, safety is of vital importance. Stainless steel pipe fittings are an ideal choice for gas pipelines with their excellent corrosion resistance and sealing properties. It can effectively prevent gas leaks and protect the lives and property of residents. During the installation of gas pipelines, the connection quality of pipe fittings directly affects the safety of the system, so it is necessary to strictly follow the relevant standards and specifications to ensure that each connection point is firm and reliable.

Industrial field

The industrial field is an important scenario for the application of pipe fittings, and different industries have different requirements for the performance and materials of pipe fittings. In the petrochemical industry, pipe fittings need to withstand harsh working conditions such as high temperature, high pressure, and strong corrosion. For example, in the crude oil processing process of the refinery, the pipeline needs to transport high-temperature and high-pressure crude oil and various chemical raw materials. Cast steel pipe fittings and stainless steel pipe fittings can meet this demand due to their high strength and excellent corrosion resistance, ensuring the safe and stable operation of the production process. In chemical production, the transportation of various corrosive media such as acids, alkalis, and salts is often involved. Pipe fittings with strong corrosion resistance such as ceramic pipe fittings and plastic pipe fittings are widely used. They can effectively resist the corrosion of the medium, extend the service life of the pipeline, and reduce production costs. The power industry is also one of the important application areas of pipe fittings. In thermal power plants, steam pipes need to withstand high-temperature and high-pressure steam. Cast steel pipe fittings and alloy steel pipe fittings can withstand such working conditions, ensure the efficient transportation of steam, and provide stable power support for power generation equipment. In nuclear power plants, the quality and safety requirements of pipe fittings are higher, and special materials and manufacturing processes are required to ensure safe operation under extreme conditions and ensure stable power generation of nuclear power plants. The metallurgical industry is also inseparable from the support of pipe fittings. In the process of steel production, various high-temperature liquids and gases need to be transported, such as molten iron, molten steel, coal gas, etc. High-temperature and wear-resistant pipe fittings can meet the special needs of the metallurgical industry and ensure the continuity and stability of the production process. For example, in the process of blast furnace ironmaking, the hot air pipe needs to transport high-temperature hot air into the blast furnace. Heat-resistant alloy pipe fittings can withstand the scouring of high-temperature hot air to ensure the normal operation of the blast furnace.

Other fields

In addition to the construction and industrial fields, pipe fittings are also widely used in agricultural irrigation, shipbuilding, aerospace and other fields. In agricultural irrigation, plastic pipe fittings have become the preferred material for agricultural irrigation systems due to their low cost, easy installation and corrosion resistance. PVC pipe fittings and PE pipe fittings are widely used in farmland irrigation pipelines, which can efficiently transport water resources to the fields, realize water-saving irrigation, improve the utilization efficiency of water resources, and help the development of agricultural production. For example, in some large-scale farmland irrigation projects, by laying a PVC pipe network and using tees, crosses and other pipe fittings to achieve branch irrigation, each piece of farmland can get sufficient water to promote the growth of crops. In the field of shipbuilding, pipe fittings are used in various pipeline systems of ships, such as fuel pipelines, seawater pipelines, fresh water pipelines, etc. Ships operate in marine environments, and pipe fittings need to have good corrosion resistance and seawater erosion resistance to ensure the safe navigation of ships. For example, in the seawater cooling system of ships, the use of corrosion-resistant copper-nickel alloy pipe fittings can effectively resist the corrosion of seawater, ensure the normal operation of the cooling system, and prevent equipment failures caused by pipeline corrosion. In the field of aerospace, the application of pipe fittings pays more attention to the lightweight and high strength of materials. Aerospace pipe fittings usually use lightweight and high-strength materials such as titanium alloys and aluminum alloys to meet the strict requirements of aircraft for weight and performance. These pipe fittings are used in key parts such as the fuel system, hydraulic system, and cooling system of aircraft to ensure that the aircraft can operate safely and reliably in extreme environments. For example, in the fuel system of an aircraft, the use of titanium alloy pipe fittings can not only reduce the weight of the aircraft and improve fuel efficiency, but also ensure the normal transportation of fuel under harsh conditions such as high altitude, low temperature, and high pressure, providing reliable power guarantee for the flight of the aircraft.

How to choose the right pipe fittings

Faced with a wide variety of pipe fittings, how to choose the right pipe fittings has become a concern for many people. Here are some key points for selecting pipe fittings, hoping to help everyone make the right decision. Consider the use environment: Different use environments have very different performance requirements for pipe fittings. If it is in a humid and highly corrosive environment, such as a chemical plant, sewage treatment plant, etc., it is necessary to choose pipe fittings with strong corrosion resistance, such as stainless steel pipe fittings, plastic pipe fittings or pipe fittings with special anti-corrosion treatment; in a high temperature environment, such as the piping system of a boiler room or thermal power plant, it is necessary to choose high temperature resistant pipe fittings, such as cast steel pipe fittings, alloy steel pipe fittings, etc. For example, in buildings near the sea, due to the high humidity and salt content of the air, water supply and drainage pipes should give priority to pipe fittings resistant to seawater corrosion to ensure the service life of the pipes. Clarify the pressure requirements: It is crucial to select pipe fittings according to the working pressure of the pipeline system. The pressure resistance of the pipe fittings must be greater than the maximum working pressure of the pipeline system to ensure the safe operation of the system. For some high-pressure pipeline systems, such as oil and natural gas pipelines, pipe fittings with high strength and good pressure resistance, such as pipe fittings made of seamless steel pipes, should be selected; while for some low-pressure pipeline systems, such as household water supply and drainage pipes, ordinary PPR pipe fittings or PVC pipe fittings can meet the requirements. For example, in the water supply system of high-rise buildings, due to the high water pressure, pipe fittings with pressure resistance grades that meet the requirements need to be selected to prevent pipe rupture or leakage. Ensure pipe diameter matching: The pipe diameter of the pipe fittings must match the pipe diameter of the connected pipe to ensure the tightness of the connection and the normal operation of the pipeline system. When selecting pipe fittings, accurately measure the outer diameter or inner diameter of the pipe, and then select pipe fittings of corresponding specifications. For example, when installing PPR water pipes, select the corresponding PPR pipe fittings according to the nominal outer diameter of the water pipe, such as 20mm PPR pipes should be matched with 20mm elbows, tees and other pipe fittings. Pay attention to material properties: Pipe fittings of different materials have different properties and should be selected according to actual needs. If the pipe fittings need to have good hygienic properties, such as for drinking water pipe systems, stainless steel pipe fittings, PPR pipe fittings, etc. can be selected. If the flexibility and sealing of the pipe fittings are important, such as the cooling water pipes of automobile engines, rubber pipe fittings are a good choice; and for some occasions with high requirements for strength and high temperature resistance, such as the aerospace field, pipe fittings made of lightweight and high-strength materials such as titanium alloy and aluminum alloy are more suitable.
